Introducing rPET

2022-10-14

Recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) might not be something that pops up in everyday conversation, but it’s important to know a bit about it if you want to make the switch to a more sustainable lifestyle.

Australians are getting more waste conscious. The latest statistics from 2009 indicate that 94 per cent of households recycled or reused their plastic bottles. Furthermore, 93 per cent recycled or reused glass, 91 per cent chucked their cans in the recycling bin, and 90 per cent did the same for plastic bags.

Of particular note is the amount of plastic bottles that are recycled. While reducing waste altogether is one noble goal, it’s still important to recycle what you do use.

Recycled material is actually used for a number of handy things. Many drink bottles, such as soft drink or water bottles, are made out of a material called polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and mountains of these are used and thrown away every year.

However, luckily for us, these old discarded bottles can be used to create something new. Introducing rPET: when recycled, bottles made of PET are cleaned, sorted and crushed into miniscule flakes. Then through the magic of science, these flakes are heating to melting point, and transformed into yarn.

This yarn is then used to make up fabric for items such as reusable shopping bags. This means fewer bottles end up buried in landfill. Plus, the process of making products from rPET consumes a lot less energy and is less resource intensive than making products from virgin materials.

Look out for other products made from recycled materials and make the most of what can be created from rPET.

Our company designed some new style of bags which are made by rPET.
